Future of public libraries at stake ~ Help us contact State Legislators now!
On Monday, June 11, 2007, State Librarian Nancy Robertson relayed some GOOD news for public libraries for the remainder of the 2007 state fiscal year that ends September 30th. "I am very pleased to announce that the moratorium on the FY07 payments of state aid to public libraries has been lifted." While this is good news for now, Michigan libraries still face serious financial crisis as legislators propose a 50% or greater cut in State Aid to libraries in fiscal year 2008. These cuts may result in elimination of interlibrary loan, delivery services, disruption of shared catalog systems, loss of summer reading programs and more. What can you do? Send an email to your State Senator and State Representative to thank them for releasing the state aid payments in 2007. Continue to express your concern to state legislators regarding possible cuts to state aid for libraries in 2008.
Print a letter (see read more below) or stop by the library to pick up prepared letters and pre-addressed envelopes to mail to your state senators and representatives.
